Why Play for The Red & Black?

More than football β€” a Winchester tradition

πŸ›‘οΈ

Safety First

American Youth Football certifies that coaches ensure proper tackling and blocking technique. Every player is professionally fitted for equipment before their first practice.

πŸ“š

Academics Matter

Winchester Youth Football requires academic eligibility every season. We partner with Winchester schools to support student-athletes in the classroom as much as on the field.

🀝

Character Building

Teamwork, discipline, respect, and resilience β€” the values we coach every day at practice become lifelong habits your child carries well beyond football.

πŸ†

Competitive Play

Regular season league games, playoffs, and championship tournaments give every player a chance to compete at their best under real game conditions.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦

Family Community

The Red & Black are a tight-knit Winchester family. Parents volunteer, cheer, and build lasting friendships while watching their children grow into confident young athletes.

🀲

Everyone Plays

WYF has no cuts and every player plays in every game. We're committed to giving every child the chance to participate, develop, and contribute to the team.

🏈

Love of the Game

Football is an amazing game that generations of youth players have loved playing. Give your player the opportunity to fall in love with the game!

πŸ’ͺ

Health & Fitness

Being active outdoors brings lasting physical and emotional health benefits. Our players grow stronger and more confident as they build friendships, develop character, and have a blast.

⚑

Skill Development

Youth football helps players develop important athletic skills and understand the game at an early age β€” a foundation that pays off whether they continue with football or carry those skills into other sports.

Ready to be part of the tradition?

Registration for 2026 closes June 15th so don't miss out.

Part of a Proud Winchester Football Tradition

Winchester Youth Football is proud to feed into one of the oldest and most storied high school football programs in Massachusetts. Our players grow up dreaming of the day they wear the Red & Black at Knowlton Stadium β€” and WYF is where that journey begins.

That tradition is alive today: the WHS Red & Black capped their 2025 season with a run to the Final Four of the MIAA Division 2 State Championship β€” a powerful reminder of where Winchester football is headed and what today's youth players are growing into.

Jeremy Fish

Jeremy Fish

Spartans Coach

Coach Jeremy Fish grew up in upstate New York, where he was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball, serving as captain of both the football and basketball teams. Those experiences helped shape his approach to leadership, accountability, and team-first play.

Coach Fish and his wife Julie are proud to be raising their family in Winchester, where their children are the third consecutive generation in her family to go through the public school system. Over the past few years, he has coached youth basketball, flag football, and baseball, with a strong focus on fundamentals, effort, and building confident, unselfish teammates. He believes youth sports play an important role in preparing kids for success later in life.

Coach Fish owns and operates a landscape construction business and brings that same discipline, preparation, and attention to detail to the field every day.

Jimmy Gibbons

Jimmy Gibbons

Spartans Coach

Coach Gibbons is a first-year youth football coach and was captain of the Winchester High School varsity football and lacrosse teams in 2021. He graduated from Skidmore College in 2025 after a four-year collegiate lacrosse career.

At Tufts University, Matt was a three-year starter at Nose Guard and earned NESCAC All-League and All-Academic accolades. Today, he serves on the Jumbos' football alumni board, coaches his sons' teams in flag football and wrestling, and leads an executive coaching practice.

Our Commitment to Player Safety

Every Winchester coach, board member, and team volunteer undergoes annual criminal background checks and completes the mandatory American Youth Football training program. We follow all American Youth Football policies without exception. Our coaching staff is fully certified, meaning every tackling drill, blocking technique, and physical contact in practice is taught to the highest standards of player safety. Each coach is required to complete NFHS Concussion in Sports training, American Red Cross CPR,and NFHS Football Tackling training. The Red and Black standard means we never cut corners β€” your child's safety is our first obligation.

Our Divisions

Three divisions β€” from first-timers to our most experienced competitors

Divisions at Winchester

Every child finds their level β€” skill- and grade-appropriate AYF competition.

Youngest Division

Titans

Where the Winchester Youth Football story begins

Eligibility

1st – 2nd GradeGrades

The Titans are where the Winchester Youth Football story begins. This is our youngest division β€” built entirely around one idea: make football fun, safe, and something every first and second grader wants to come back to.

Coaches in the Titans division know that players at this age are learning how football works for the very first time. The focus is on fundamentals β€” how to line up, how to move as a team, how to block and tackle safely, and how to understand the basics of the game. Every drill, every practice, and every rep is designed to build confidence and love of the sport before it builds anything else.

The Titans compete within AYF's age-protected All American division structure, which means every player on the field is matched against children at the same stage of physical and emotional development. Every child who wants to play belongs here.

The Titans experience is about more than the scoreboard. We want every player to finish their first season knowing two things: what it feels like to be part of a team, and that they can't wait to get back on the field.

What to Expect as a Titans Family
  • βœ“ In August, 3–4 practices per week focused on age-appropriate fundamentals. From September on, 2–3 practices per week.
  • βœ“ All Titans coaches hold current NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) Football Tackling, Red Cross CPR, and NFHS Concussion certifications
  • βœ“ 8 v. 8 full-pads league play against other Northeast Commonwealth Youth Football and Cheer (NCYFC) town programs
  • βœ“ No prior experience needed β€” every player gets meaningful time on the field
  • βœ“ Academic eligibility required β€” passing grades from the prior school year per AYF scholastic standards
Middle Division

Crusaders

Where youth football starts to click

Eligibility

3rd – 4th GradeGrades

The Crusaders are where youth football starts to click. Players coming into the Crusaders division are no longer learning what football is β€” they're learning how to play it well. Third and fourth graders in this division have the physical and cognitive development to begin understanding real strategy, run designed plays, and take real ownership of their positions on the field.

This is the division where many players discover that football is their sport. Practices get more focused, the playbook gets more interesting, and the competition gets more meaningful. Crusaders coaches introduce players to both sides of the ball with real depth β€” offensive formations, defensive alignments, and the mental side of reading a play before it happens.

This is also the division where team culture takes hold. Crusaders players learn what it means to prepare, to compete, and to pick each other up. The bonds formed in this division have a way of lasting long after the season ends.

What to Expect as a Crusaders Family
  • βœ“ In August, 4 practices per week. From September on, 3 practices per week β€” conditioning and skill development
  • βœ“ Expanded offensive and defensive scheme β€” players begin position specialization
  • βœ“ All Crusaders coaches hold current NFHS Football Tackling, Red Cross CPR, and NFHS Concussion certifications
  • βœ“ 11 v. 11 competition against other NCYFC town programs
  • βœ“ No prior experience needed β€” every player gets meaningful time on the field
  • βœ“ Academic eligibility required β€” passing grades from the prior school year per AYF rules
Senior Division

Spartans

Our most competitive division β€” bridge to middle and high school football

Eligibility

5th – 6th GradeGrades

The Spartans are Winchester Youth Football's most competitive division β€” and the bridge between youth football and the Winchester middle and high school programs. Fifth and sixth grade players in this division are ready for a serious, committed football experience that prepares them for everything that comes next.

Spartans practice and play at a level that mirrors what players will encounter when they step into the WHS Red and Black program. The playbook is more sophisticated, expectations around effort and preparation are higher, and players are treated as the athletes they are becoming. Coaches in this division have a shared commitment to developing technically sound, mentally tough, and team-first football players.

Players can enter the Spartans with no prior football experience, but those who complete the Spartans leave Winchester Youth Football ready β€” ready for middle school football, ready for the WHS Varsity pipeline, and ready with the discipline, character, and football IQ that only experience can deliver.

What to Expect as a Spartans Family
  • βœ“ In August, 4 practices per week. From September on, 3 practices per week
  • βœ“ Advanced offensive and defensive systems β€” full position specialization and game planning
  • βœ“ NCYFC regional schedule
  • βœ“ All Spartans coaches hold current NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) Football Tackling, Red Cross CPR, and NFHS Concussion certifications
  • βœ“ Academic eligibility required
  • βœ“ Direct development pipeline to the WHS Red and Black football program

πŸ“‹ Division Placement & AYF Eligibility

Placement is determined by grade per the American Youth Football All American division structure, ensuring children compete against peers at the same stage of development. AYF also requires academic eligibility: players must have passing grades from the prior school year. Tournament-eligible Spartans must additionally complete an AYF Affidavit of Scholastic Eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your child joins the Winchester Youth Football program.

Registration & Eligibility
All boys and girls entering 1st through 6th grade in Fall 2026. No prior football experience needed!
The WYF 2026 registration fee is $450. There is a $75 discount per player for families with multiple players (e.g., $375 + $375 = $750 for a family with 2 players)
The fee covers all personal equipment (e.g., helmet, shoulder pads, padded pants, jersey) except for cleats, field equipment (e.g., tackle dummies, footballs), and operational costs (e.g., field use fees, coach training, referees). Since this is our first year, these initial equipment costs are significantly higher than they will be in future years.
Absolutely! Every player who wants to be part of WYF can join. We have a scholarship program to ensure that costs are manageable for every participating family. Please contact David Harrison at dwharrison@mgh.harvard.edu to learn more.
No and no. Every player who wants to be part of WYF can join and every player plays in every game.
Registration closes on June 15th, 2026.
Absolutely! Every player who wants to be part of WYF can join (notice the theme here πŸ™‚). We will be revisiting and reinforcing fundamentals to ensure that no players are left behind if they start later.
Yes, but with an important caveat; this is a judgment call we ask each family to make. Football is a big commitment–there is much fun to be had, and also a great deal to learn. One of the most meaningful parts of football is the camaraderie that develops as players and coaches work together toward a common goalβ€”so the more time players spend together, the stronger their connections, the better the team becomes, and that’s where the real magic happens! If participation in another sport will present frequent conflicts, you and your player should think carefully if you still will be able to have a great football experience.
Yes! Right now, if you are interested in coaching, please contact David Harrison (dwharrison@mgh.harvard.edu)--coaching is an amazing experience and we still have space for more coaches; no prior coaching experience necessary! As we get closer to the season, we will share more volunteer opportunities, from team spirit events to support at games (e.g., concessions, running chains).
Absolutely! This is a foundational year and we will put all the support we receive to great use. We have both an individual donor program and a business sponsorship program with exciting promotion opportunities. You can indicate interest on the registration form and/or contact David (dwharrison@mgh.harvard.edu) or Mai Harrison (mai_harrison02@hotmal.com).
Families must cancel prior to 6/15/26 to receive a refund less a $50 administrative fee. Given the need to purchase equipment, no refunds will be issued after 6/15/26. However, if a team cannot be fielded because of insufficient registrants, all registrants will receive a full refund without any administrative fee.
Equipment & Uniforms
We strongly encourage every registered player to attend an equipment fitting so we can make sure helmets, pads, and uniforms fit properly before the season begins. Fitting dates and location haven't been finalized yet β€” we're waiting on equipment ship dates from our supplier and will share the schedule as soon as we have it. Depending on how things come together, attendance may or may not be strictly required, and we'll do our best to offer flexible options for families. Medical release forms will also be collected at fittings.
Football cleats (molded plastic or rubber studs) are required for tackle divisions. Soccer cleats are acceptable for Flag Football. Metal cleats are NOT permitted in any division. Mid-top football cleats provide the best ankle support. We recommend brands like Nike, Under Armour, or Adidas β€” but any molded football cleat is fine. Bring your child's cleats to the equipment fitting so coaches can check fit.
Practices & Games
Our practice and game schedules are not finalized and are subject to change. That said, our preliminary schedule is:: 8/3/26 - 8/27/26: Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs 4:30 - 6:30 PM :: 9/1/26 - Season end: Tues 4:30 - 6:30 PM, Thurs 4:30 - 6:30 PM, Sat 8:30 - 10 AM :: 8 weeks of games on Sundays, Grade 1/2 @ 9 AM, Grade 3/4 @ 10:30 AM, Grade 5/6 @ 12 PM
Titan practices are TBD.Crusader practices are TBD. Spartan practices are TBD.
Most games kick off between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM on Sundays. Game length varies by division but typically runs 1.5–2 hours including warm-ups. Players should arrive 45 minutes before kickoff. The full game day schedule, with times for all four divisions, is published at the start of each week on our website and emailed to registered families.
If a practice or game needs to be cancelled β€” typically due to weather or field conditions β€” registered families will be notified as early as possible. We're still finalizing our communication channels for the 2026 season (likely some combination of email, a parent group chat, and social media), and we'll share the specific channels and timing expectations with families before the season begins. When in doubt on a rainy or severe weather day, please check for an update before heading to the field.
Safety & League Rules
Player safety is our highest priority, and it shapes every decision we make β€” from coach selection, to how practices are run, to how equipment is fitted. Specifically:
  • Certified coaches. Every WYF coach is certified through the American Youth Football (AYF) Coach Certification program, which covers safe tackling and blocking technique, concussion awareness, code of conduct, and standards for working with youth athletes.
  • NFHS safe tackling training. All tackle division coaches complete NFHS Football Tackling training, which teaches proper tackling, blocking, and contact technique specifically designed to reduce injury risk in youth players.
  • Concussion & CPR training. Every coach completes NFHS Concussion in Sports training and American Red Cross CPR certification, and follows a strict Return-to-Play protocol requiring written physician clearance before any player who shows signs of a concussion can return to practice or games.
  • Annual background checks. Every coach, board member, and team volunteer passes a criminal background check every year β€” no exceptions.
  • Limits on full-contact time. Our league (NCYFC) mandates strict limits on full-contact practice time per week β€” significantly less than most people assume β€” to reduce repetitive contact exposure.
  • Properly fitted equipment. Every player is professionally fitted for helmets, shoulder pads, and uniforms before their first practice. Players cannot participate in practice or games without properly fitted equipment.
We take a player-first approach at all times β€” your child's safety is our first obligation.
Every Winchester Youth Football coach, board member, and team volunteer is required to complete the American Youth Football Coach Certification program and pass a criminal background check annually before interacting with players. AYF Coach Certification covers safe tackling and blocking technique, concussion awareness, code of conduct, and standards for working with youth athletes. This is a non-negotiable requirement β€” no exceptions.
Any player who shows signs of a concussion during practice or a game is immediately removed and cannot return until cleared in writing by a licensed physician. Winchester Youth Football follows a strict Return to Play protocol: players must be symptom-free and receive physician clearance before practicing or competing. Coaches are trained in concussion recognition and take all potential head injury reports seriously, regardless of how minor they appear.
All Winchester Youth Football parents and guardians are required to sign the Winchester Youth Football Parent Code of Conduct at registration. This means: cheering positively for all players, refraining from coaching or yelling instructions from the sidelines, showing respect to game officials, and modeling the sportsmanship we ask our children to display. Violations can result in removal from the game site and, in repeated cases, removal from the program. We take this seriously β€” our kids are watching us.
